Our Communication (Email)
Communication and transparency are a big thing at MSL. With so many participants attending irregularly, it is important to communicate well. A mailing list has been chosen for our internal communication. So you always communicate with ALL the other participants. This is transparent for everyone, but does create a large flow of email traffic.
We therefore recommend that you create a separate mailbox in your mail program for these emails. To keep it organized, limit your responses to the title of the subject of the email. If you want to go off on a tangent, create a new message. If the subject of the mail does not interest you then you can ignore this email and all follow-up messages. Some email programs have the option to unsubscribe from a thread. After a few weeks you will find that this system gives a lot of information about what is going on on space.
Introduction
After your first membership fee and first pile of emails, the board will invite you for a (further) introduction. During this introduction, you can ask questions to the board and they will get an idea of who you are and what you want. From this may follow recommendations of how best to address certain issues.
Getting To Work
For simple machines (like a cordless drill, for example) you can get started without further introduction, but don't feel uncomfortable asking for help anyway if you are still unsure about certain things. We would much rather see someone who asks two times too many questions than someone who thinks he/she already knows everything. With all equipment (including a cordless drill) you can injure yourself and/or others. So ask: "How to do that?" That's what our mailing list is for! Write a message on the mailing list with a clear subject, for example "who can explain the cordless drill to me?" or ask someone if you are in the space. You will see that there is always someone who can show you the way.
For some (heavy) devices, we have a separate procedure that requires you to have taken an introduction before you can work with them.
Introduction To The Machines
Some devices that we consider potentially "dangerous" are behind a security system so that only people with "access" can turn them on. This is done with the access token that also allows you to open the front door. Every participant can enter, but not everyone can turn on all devices. To gain access, you must have followed the introduction (even if you consider yourself an 'expert') where the basic issues of that device are explained. REMEMBER! This is not a course or training, we only show you how to work safely with this machine. The real work with the machine you either have to learn by yourself (wiki, youtube, etc) or you have to ask another participant to guide you further. There are many people who can and are willing to help you, but please note that everyone does this voluntarily. So you can't force anything and sometimes it takes a little longer than you had hoped. Time pressure is one of the main causes of mistakes. So always make sure you schedule your time liberally. Time to create your design, time to update your skills, time to create AND time to clean everything up again.
werken in een gedeelde werkplaats
Because working in a general workshop is different from working in your own hobby room, it is important that you follow our hygiene rules:
wiki
